Psychology Today Profile
Aloha, my name is Vanessa Cabilan and I was born and raised on O’ahu. I was a transient child growing up, living in Mililani, Pearl City, on base, Makakilo, and in ‘Aiea. But when people ask what side of the island I’m from, I always say Waipahu as I spent most of my time there at my grandma’s house. My counseling style is very much influenced by local culture and values. Coming from a large Hawai’i family, I understand the importance of building relationships with others as well as the intricacies of what maintaining those relationships may look like in the context of how, where, and why they are formed.
How we relate to the people around us will impact how we experience life. The core of my practice emphasizes building relationships and connections with clients by using a culturally sensitive and person-centered, strengths-based approach. Together, we can examine behavior patterns that are no longer working for you and rediscover your inner strength by creating new patterns of resilience, love, and patience. My goal is to help lead you down the pathway of self-awareness by examining these patterns and creating new connections within yourself and new relationships with all the meaningful parts of your life. Making the decision to start your journey of healing can be difficult. You deserve a compassionate support system that will help you every small and incremental step along the way.
